Come join us for a miniature painting workshop! Sit down and paint a free miniature, supplied by Reaper, and pick up some tips and tricks from other painters and miniatures experts.

RPGChicago.com will be participating in the next ENWorld Chicago Game Day at Games Plus, on February 27th. We will have a table, paints, miniatures and great company to help you learn how to do some basics and pick up some great techniques. Come and go as you like, we'll be painting from 9.30 till about 2.00pm.

You can also take advantage of the day and stay and play in the other great games happening on Game Day. Links to the full Game Day schedule are coming soon.

Please note: If you RSVP here, you should also RSVP at the ENWorld Gameday signup thread.

I'm interested in learning some solid fundamentals of painting my own RPG miniatures. I'm using Reaper products, pretty much, and although I've done a lot of reading online about techniques, etc., I think I'd definitely benefit from a face-to-face workshop environment, with an experienced painter on hand to offer tips and critiques on work in progress.

I've found that using a small flashlight to actually light up the fig from the source is an excellent way to determine shadows. The key is to be consistent in the direction. ;-) Also, we have to keep in mind that the figs are almost always viewed from above. Zack, if we can find him, at Games Plus, is an amazing painter!

You mean, like a figure holding a torch and the light backwashing onto the figure via highlighting? Yea, I'd like to learn that too... Mark Allen (who should be there) has done stuff like that.

Yes! So glad we have something planned now. Oh, any tips on object-source lighting would rock, too.

    •  I'm biased, as I'm one of the speakers, but I learned a great deal from Michael and the painters! They're all first rate folks with many good tricks, most of which I wrote down here in a new message thread.
    •  Had a great time. I enjoyed meeting folks, and frankly, watching them work. Everyone had a different take on painting minis, and there was a nice variety in terms of what folks were painting for (character-focused minis, vs. speed painting armies, vs. quick work to create orcs aplenty). Hearing opinions about the craft makes a huge difference when you are face-to-face with someone who's invested serious time in that craft. Big thanks to Warcry. He was generous with his time, his expertise, and his materials (I'm now plus one ogre!). He not only talked; he demonstrated, in real time, with example work he had prepared. So when's the next one, hmmm???
    •  Was great to see painters there old and young and trade ideas.
