I'm running a 12 hour marathon of B2, Keep on the Borderlands for International Traditional Gaming Week. Tentatively, it'll be from 10am to 10pm on Saturday, March 27th at Chicagoland Games in Chicago.

The idea is similar to how the "Tower of Gygax" adventures are run at GenCon. You come in, you wait for a slot at the table. When someone dies or wants to give up their seat, or they've been there an hour, someone else sits down. You have pre-gen character sheets in front of you. You start at the Keep, you go to the Caves of Chaos and make some noise. If you level up, tada! You're 2nd level. Here's your sign. If you die as a first level, let someone else take your place. If you die as a 2nd+ level, take your sheet with you, I put out a new shiny first level in your place.

Of course, I'm going to jazz up the old Caves - can't have people running through it who've memorized the damn thing... I gotta make some changes. But the idea will be to go from beginning to end and see where we end up.

Hirelings, 1st level characters, 10' poles and all that - we'll use Holmes for the basic rules. Yea, really. I have no idea how I'm going to survive running this one, but what the hey?!

This game is being run as part of International Traditional Gaming Week - a whole week of old school roleplaying organized by TARGA (Traditional Adventure Roleplaying Game Assoc.) It's a group of gamers keeping the flames alive on the games from the 70s/80s and newer versions. We hope you'll come out and try and old school game during this week - and if you're interested in running a game, we'd love to welcome you into the fold!

The only way to get Holmes now is to get an illegal copy of the PDF or find the blue book somewhere. The good news is that it's not necessary. Basic D&D is extremely simple. Tell me what you want to do. I'll figure out if it works, or you tell me more, or we roll some dice. Easy peasy.

If I haven't played OD&D, should I get the Holmes rule set and read through it before I come, or will a solid foundation in later editions be good? I don't want to slow down game play with rules clarification questions...
